What Would You Like to Invent?

Do you know that most everyday items were just a dream for someone or an accidental discovery? Like the contestants on American Inventor, everyone has an idea that could possibly become the next big discovery. Inventions are a very serious business; inventors submit their inventions to the United States Patent and Trademark Office. We'd like to hear about your idea or invention. You may draw a picture, write about your invention or send us a computer graphic. You have from August 1-31, 2007 to submit your entry! Winner gets a prize! For ages 9-up.

Also, don't forget that today is the last day to submit your answers for our July Harry Potter Trivia Contest!

The Mysterious Origin of Seventrees

Some of you may have noticed that Seven Trees Blvd is spelled differently than Seventrees branch library. This observation made one of our staff members curious about the origin of the name. We have been unable to determine why this neighborhood was named Seventrees. If anyone has an answer (real or fictitious) please come in and tell one of us! One good place to search for information about the history of San Jose and it's neighborhoods is the California room at the King Library on the fourth floor. Another good way to inquire is to ask anyone who has been living in this area since the 1950's. If you have a parent or grandparent who has been living in this area for a while, they might just know. The most creative (or correct) answer will be awarded a special prize.

Look luck in your finding. Cheers.

Following is the winning entry by May (NOTE: The following has not been authorized as an official chapter from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling.) :

… From the last chapter of
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows

The Portkey had taken Harry to a deserted lot with the remains of a building. Suddenly his scar burst into pain. Clutching his head, he sank to his knees. He saw a blinding green light...then a woman clutching a bundle, crying, “Not Harry, please no, take me, kill me instead-”
Finally the pain subsided and the vision disappeared. He shook his head and breathed in deeply. Then he stood up and looked around.
“Where am I?” he whispered to himself. Then it hit him: He was at his parents’ house.
“Ah. I see that you have come,” an uncomfortably familiar voice rasped. Harry spun around.
It was Voldemort.
A swarm of Death Eaters gathered behind him. Harry recognized Lucius Malfoy’s cold grey eyes glaring at him. Next to Malfoy was a miniature version of him.
“Well, well Potter. I see that we have met again.” Draco Malfoy’s voice sneered.
“Silence, Malfoy,” a voice barked.
Harry looked to see who it was.
“Snape,” Harry whispered. “How dare he!” he said louder.
“Oh, him? Yes. Snape had decided to rejoin,” Voldemort explained with a slight twisted smile. “Normally I would not forgive a traitor, but as you might have recalled, he did well last year.”
“Thank you master, for your mercy.” Snape came up to him, kneeled, and kissed the hem of his robes.
“Loyalty will be rewarded,” Voldemort replied. “Now Harry. Almost seventeen years…and yet, you’re still alive.”
“You’re damn right I am,” Harry retorted. “And I’m gonna live to see you die!”
“Heh, heh…” Voldemort chuckled. “We’ll see about that. I have tried to kill you many times now. Tonight I will succeed.”
“What makes you think that?”
“Well, let’s see, shall we? I am an all-powerful wizard, with thousands of men and women here to back me up. You, however, have nothing.”
He was right. Harry was alone and he had less experience than Voldemort.
“Three years ago, we had a wizards’ duel, correct?” Voldemort said after a moment of silence. “I believe we should finish it, like civilized men.”
Harry said nothing.
“I take that as a yes. Now, wand out.”
There was no other way. Harry reluctantly stuck out his wand. They stiffly bowed to each other. The moment they got up, Voldemort yelled, “Crucio!!”
“Expelliarmus!” Harry yelled a split second later.
“Very nice, very nice,” Voldemort said sarcastically after Harry had successfully blocked the curse. “Let’s see if you can do any better-CRUCIO!!!!”
This time the curse hit Harry. Pain like thousands of white-hot needles shot through every part of his body. He desperately tried to keep his head clear.
“How do I kill him? How do I kill him?” he thought to himself through the pain. “How can he be still be alive when I already destroyed the last Horcrux?”
“You can’t kill me, boy,” Voldemort snarled. “The last of my seven Horcruxes is still in existence. So while you die, I, the great Lord Voldemort, will rule the world, like I intended to.”
Apparently Voldemort was oblivious to the fact that Harry had destroyed the last Horcrux. Then an absurd thought came to Harry: What if he accidentally made an eighth Horcrux?
It was a possibility. Then what was the eighth Horcrux? He thought of all the things Voldemort did. He killed Harry’s parents. Then he tried (and failed) to kill Harry, thus giving him the lightning-bolt scar and the ability to speak to snakes. Then an even more absurd thought found its way to his mind: What if on that night, he accidentally made me the eighth Horcrux without knowing it?
It made sense. Then it sunk in that he would have to allow himself to get killed to kill Voldemort. It scared him, but he realized that he would have to do it. If he did it, nobody would have to lose his or her parents like he did. If he allowed himself to get killed, then the world would be freed of Voldemort and all the pain he would cause. He would have to do it, for the sake of the world.
Voldemort finally lifted the curse. Harry breathed in. He felt a lot better until he remembered what he had to do.
“Well, you have entertained me enough tonight,” Voldemort said. “Now, I shall kill you-AVADA KEDAVRA!!”
Harry saw a burst of green light then, before he fell to the ground, he died.
As soon as his life ended Voldemort also died. Then on the empty lot, all the Death Eaters fell to the ground. A tabby cat ran by with fear in its eyes.

At the stroke of midnight Harry woke up. Ron, Hermione, Professor McGonagall, and Fawkes were standing above him.
“What happened?” he mumbled weakly. “Didn’t I die?”
“Yes, yes, that is what I saw, but…” Professor McGonagall was just as puzzled as Harry.
Harry sat up and looked around. There were the bodies of Voldemort and his Death Eaters everywhere. Slowly it all came back to him. He had allowed Voldemort to kill him because he was the last Horcrux. Then…how come he was alive?
“Harry!” Ron gasped. “Your scar! It’s….it’s…gone.”
“What?!”
“He’s right!” Hermione leaned in for a closer look. “Your forehead’s bare. See, look.” She held out a small mirror.
Sure enough, the scar he had worn all his life was gone. But why?
“Tell us what happened, dear,” said Professor McGonagall.
Harry told them everything. When he was done, Hermione said softly, “I don’t think you were the last Horcrux. Your scar was. That’s why it’s no longer on your forehead.”
He nodded. That made sense. “But how come I’m still alive? I died, didn’t I?”
Professor McGonagall spoke again. “I believe there was a prophecy made years ago. Wasn’t it ‘one survives while the other dies’? Obviously, you survived, while Vol-Voldemort died.”
All this was overwhelming for Harry. Then Fawkes let out a small sound. He felt better now.
“Well Harry, it looks like you’ve saved the world again.” Professor McGonagall said. “Come on, let’s get back to the castle. Madam Pomfrey needs to take a look at you.”
“Wait. One last question. How come all the Death Eaters died when Voldemort died?” Harry asked
“Well, apparently the Death Eaters are connected to Voldemort by their Dark Marks. When he died, they all died because he had part of them. Do you get that?” Professor McGonagall explained.
“Sort of,” Harry said
“That’s good enough. Come. We’re going back.” Professor McGonagall got up and pointed to a soup can. “We have a Portkey. Okay, gather round.”
They all gathered around the Portkey and prepared to return to Hogwarts, and a now peaceful world.

What happens when Harry and his friends return to Hogwarts? Read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows to find out!
